Where it came from
The Demon of Dark Schemes was originally introduced as a mythic rare card in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kaladesh. This specific version is a promo printing designated with collector number 73s, released as part of the set's broader promotional support. The card embodies the Art Deco-inspired, invention-focused aesthetic of the Kaladesh plane, where the dark, parasitic nature of the demon contrasts sharply with the vibrant, energy-rich steampunk setting of the world.
The creature was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific artist known for his definitive contributions to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. In his design, Briclot captured the menace of the demon amidst the ornate, golden architecture of the setting, emphasizing the character's ability to reanimate fallen creatures from the graveyard. Upon its release, players recognized the card for its potent board-clearing capabilities and its role in graveyard-centric strategies, cementing its status as a distinctive mechanical and visual piece within the Kaladesh block.
