Where it came from
Authority of the Consuls was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Kaladesh. This particular iteration is a promotional version, distributed through the game's Friday Night Magic program. The card's mechanics were designed to provide players with a defensive tool against aggressive, creature-heavy strategies, embodying the rigid, orderly control exerted by the governing Consulate within the world of Kaladesh.
The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who rendered the austere, mechanical aesthetic of the plane's ruling body. The design focuses on the thematic elements of bureaucratic intervention and suppression, mirroring the set's narrative conflict between the inventors of the city and the oppressive forces of the state. It was well-regarded by players for its efficiency in competitive formats and remains a distinct example of the set's polished, steampunk-inspired visual identity.
