Demonic Attorney

Demonic Attorney was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a need for a portable, fast-paced strategy game that could be played during academic downtime. As a black-aligned card, it reflects the game's early thematic focus on dark fantasy, sacrifice, and the manipulation of life and death, which established the mechanical color pie still utilized in modern gameplay.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game’s original art director. Tasked with establishing the visual identity of the entire set, Myrfors leaned into a surreal and gritty aesthetic that moved away from the high-fantasy tropes typical of the era. The piece was received as a quintessential example of the game's early, diverse artistic style, which relied on a collage of freelance illustrators. It remains a hallmark of the Alpha set's scarcity and its significance to the burgeoning hobby of collectible card gaming.
