Where it came from
Demonic Pact was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card was intended to capture the flavor of a Faustian bargain, mechanics-wise, by offering the player powerful effects over four turns before forcing a self-defeating conclusion. It represents the color black's philosophy of ambition at any cost.
The card’s striking illustration was created by artist Aleksi Briclot. He focused on the visual motif of the binding contract, utilizing a dark, ominous aesthetic to convey the weight of the pact. Upon release, the card received significant attention from competitive players for its complex decision-making requirements and its unique role as a high-risk, high-reward enchantment in various constructed formats.
