Where it came from
Demonic Rising was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the narrative of the archangel Avacyn returning to the plane of Innistrad to restore balance against encroaching darkness. This enchantment card reflects the corrupting influence of demons on the plane, offering players a recurring creature token if their board remains empty of other creatures at the end of their turn.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy illustrator known for his dramatic lighting and atmospheric world-building. Briclot's design emphasizes the gothic horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad block, utilizing shadow and silhouette to convey the inevitable arrival of a demonic entity. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit niche, inclusion for casual black-aligned decks, praised for its mechanical synergy with the set's graveyard-centric themes.
