Demonic Taskmaster

Demonic Taskmaster was released in 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored. Designed for the game's black color identity, the card reflects the set's gothic horror theme, which focused on the struggle for survival in a world besieged by darkness following the release of the archangel Avacyn. Its design centers on the classic 'demon' mechanical trope, providing a high power-to-mana cost ratio balanced by a restrictive upkeep cost that forces players to sacrifice their own creatures.

The card's striking imagery was illustrated by the artist Dave Kendall. Kendall, known for his gritty and atmospheric style, aimed to convey a sense of oppressive authority and inevitable decay. Within the competitive community, the card was viewed as a strong limited play, prized for its ability to dominate the board state if the player could mitigate its drawback, though it saw more limited use in constructed formats where more efficient threats were often preferred.
