Demon's Grasp

Demon's Grasp was released as part of the Duel Decks: Nissa vs. Ob Nixilis set, which debuted in 2016. These preconstructed products were designed by Wizards of the Coast to offer ready-to-play, thematic experiences that highlighted the rivalry between specific Planeswalkers within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This particular deck focused on the contrast between the green-aligned elf Nissa Revane and the powerful, black-aligned demon Ob Nixilis, providing players with a narrative-driven gameplay experience right out of the box.

The artwork for this card was created by Deruchenko Alexander, who captured the menacing, visceral nature of the spell to align with Ob Nixilis's demonic theme. As a common card within the set, it was designed to serve as functional removal, helping players manage the board state during the back-and-forth tension of the deck's gameplay. It remains a representative example of the mid-2010s approach to Duel Decks, emphasizing atmospheric world-building through mechanical interaction.
