Where it came from
Demon's Grasp was released in November 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to be a self-contained, replayable experience where players combine two 20-card themed decks to create a functional draft environment. The card functions as a common-rarity sorcery intended to provide players with a straightforward method of creature removal, fitting within the set's broader goal of making complex game mechanics more accessible to newer players.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Tuan Duong Chu. The visual design focuses on the visceral, dark aesthetic typical of black-aligned cards in the game, emphasizing a skeletal, spectral claw reaching out to incapacitate an opponent's creature. As a core component of the set's graveyard-centric and removal-heavy black themes, it was received as a functional utility piece that reinforces the aggressive, high-interaction playstyle encouraged by the Jumpstart format.
