Provenance

Where it came from

Desert was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce a distinct thematic flavor based on the stories of One Thousand and One Nights. Unlike later expansions, Arabian Nights was intended as a standalone experiment, utilizing a unique setting that deviated from the traditional high-fantasy tropes of the base game.

The card features artwork by Dameon Willich, who contributed several pieces to the set. Willich’s illustrations for Arabian Nights were characterized by a muted, earthy palette that sought to capture the arid and mystical atmosphere of the desert landscapes. The card’s design, which provides utility by dealing damage to attacking creatures, was well-received for its strategic interaction with combat, becoming a foundational card for control-oriented decks during the game's early developmental years.
