Provenance

Where it came from

Desert was originally released in the 1994 Arabian Nights expansion, the first ever expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and his team, the set drew heavily from One Thousand and One Nights, establishing a tradition of top-down flavor design. The card was created as a utility land with a unique activated ability that allowed players to deal damage to attacking creatures, reflecting the harsh and unforgiving nature of a desert environment within the game's mechanics.

This specific version, numbered 118, was released in the 2006 Time Spiral 'Timeshifted' set. This set featured 121 iconic cards from Magic's history, reprinted with the original art and the classic 1993 card frame but using a distinct purple expansion symbol. Artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game's first art director, provided the original illustration. The re-release was intended to celebrate the game's evolution by revisiting mechanics and aesthetics from its earliest days, and it was widely lauded by long-time players for its nostalgic value.
