Where it came from
The Desert of the Glorified was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the trading card game ecosystem. As a land card designed specifically for the Necron Dynasties deck, it represents the desolate, metallic tomb worlds that define the Necron faction's lore.
The art was crafted by illustrator Joseph Meehan, who focused on capturing the cold, alien architecture and arid, monolithic landscapes of the Necron home worlds. The design intent was to evoke a sense of ancient, dormant power through a stark color palette and sharp, geometric forms. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its thematic integration of Necron mechanics, serving as a functional and flavorful staple for fans of the faction.
