Where it came from
The Mandate of Abaddon was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic and lore of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanical framework of Magic. The card was designed as a thematic staple for the Ruinous Powers deck, focusing on the chaos and destructive influence of Abaddon the Despoiler.
The artwork for the card was commissioned from Igor Sidorenko, whose style captures the visceral and imposing nature of the Warmaster of Chaos. The design intent was to translate the narrative weight of Abaddon's leadership into a gameplay mechanic, emphasizing his ability to command the legions of the Black Legion. Upon its release, the set was well-received by both Magic players and Warhammer enthusiasts for its ability to faithfully represent iconic tabletop elements while maintaining the strategic depth of the Commander format.
