Desolate Mire

Desolate Mire was released in 2024 as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander set. It belongs to a cycle of 'slow lands' that enter the battlefield tapped unless the player controls two or fewer other lands, providing players with necessary mana color fixing in the high-variance environment of multiplayer Commander games. The card’s design reflects the set's frontier fantasy aesthetic, blending the traditional Magic: The Gathering landscape with the rugged, lawless themes of a western-inspired plane.

The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captures the desolate, swampy atmosphere central to the visual identity of the set. The illustration emphasizes the harsh, unforgiving terrain of the Thunder Junction plane, serving both a mechanical purpose for land-based ramp strategies and a narrative role in establishing the world-building of the expansion. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in budget-conscious mana bases, functioning as an accessible alternative to more expensive land cycles.
