Provenance

Where it came from

Desolation Angel was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse set, the final installment of the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to conclude the conflict between the plane of Dominaria and the Phyrexians, and this card was intended to represent the devastating power of the forces aligned against the protagonists. Its gameplay mechanics, featuring a 'kicker' cost that destroys all lands upon entry, reflect the high-stakes, cataclysmic narrative of the set's climax.

The card's striking imagery was created by the fantasy illustrator Brom. Known for his gothic and dark aesthetic, Brom utilized his characteristic moody color palette and imposing figure work to depict the Angel as a figure of both celestial beauty and absolute ruin. The art was well-received by the player base for capturing the grim atmosphere of the Apocalypse storyline and has since become an iconic visual representation of the game's early 2000s era.
