Destructive Tampering was originally released in the Aether Revolt expansion, a 2017 set that concluded the Kaladesh block. The set focused on a rebellion against the authoritarian Consulate on the plane of Kaladesh, and the card's design reflects the chaotic, revolutionary atmosphere of the narrative, emphasizing the destruction of mechanical infrastructure. It was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic: The Gathering's history that can be found in Set Boosters.
