Destructive Tampering

Destructive Tampering was originally printed in the Aether Revolt expansion, released in early 2017 as part of the Kaladesh block for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the lush, steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, the card was designed to reflect the block's focus on artifacts and the resistance efforts against the ruling Consulate. The mechanic, which destroys artifacts, was a functional response to the artifact-heavy environment of the set, offering players a specific tool to disrupt their opponent's resource acceleration.

The artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, captures a moment of mechanical sabotage consistent with the set's thematic tension. Kieryluk’s work for the set leaned into the interplay between magic and machinery, emphasizing the high-energy, colorful aesthetic that defined the Kaladesh plane. When reprinted in The List—a curated selection of past cards inserted into modern booster packs—it served as a nod to the enduring utility of specific tactical spells within the game's evolving competitive landscape.
