Where it came from
Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur first appeared in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering expansion New Phyrexia. Designed as a high-cost blue creature representing the head of the Progress Engine, the card embodies the Phyrexian faction's obsession with perfection through physiological experimentation and forced evolution. It was intended to be a powerful, game-altering late-game threat that punishes opponents by depleting their hand while replenishing the controller's resources.
The art was illustrated by Eric Deschamps, who captured the creature's eerie, porcelain-like aesthetic and clinical, nightmarish presence. When released as part of 'The List'—a rotating selection of reprints curated by Wizards of the Coast for inclusion in Set Boosters—it retained its status as a notorious commander and reanimation target. Its design has been received as a hallmark of complex, oppressive control mechanics, remaining a polarizing staple in eternal formats for over a decade.
