Where it came from
Devastation was released in 1999 as part of the initial Starter Set for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, produced by Decipher, Inc. The game was designed to capitalize on the massive success of the Star Wars Special Editions, providing players with a strategic way to simulate iconic battles from the original trilogy. The card is a Dark Side interrupt, specifically themed around the destruction of Alderaan, reflecting the immense power and cruelty of the Galactic Empire during the opening events of A New Hope.
The visual design of the card utilizes a cinematic still from the film, capturing the stark, ominous scale of the Death Star's superlaser. Like much of the 1999 Starter Set, the card was intended to be accessible to new players while maintaining the deep, rules-heavy complexity that defined Decipher's competitive landscape. It was received as a staple utility card for Imperial decks, valued for its ability to target specific Rebel objectives and maintain the narrative tension of the game.
