Provenance

Where it came from

Devastating Summons was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked the conclusion of the Zendikar block, a narrative arc centered on the emergence of the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensibly powerful entities that threatened the survival of the multiverse. The card was designed to reflect the destructive, high-risk nature of summoning these titanic beings, requiring players to sacrifice their lands in exchange for a temporary army of Elemental tokens.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Jung Park, who was instrumental in defining the visual language of the Eldrazi block. Park’s vision for the piece focused on the visual translation of the spell's mechanical trade-off, emphasizing a sense of chaotic eruption and scale. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective tool in competitive play, particularly for aggressive strategies that aimed to overwhelm opponents before the drawback of lost land development could impede the player's long-term resources.
