Where it came from
Devout Chaplain was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 expansion, a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. This card, originally debuting in the Dark Ascension set, was reprinted here to support the 'Ruthless Regiment' preconstructed deck, which focused on the Human and Human Soldier creature types. The card was chosen for this deck to provide players with a repeatable utility effect that punishes opponents who rely heavily on artifact and enchantment strategies.
The card's art was provided by Jason Chan, who has illustrated numerous cards for the franchise. His design emphasizes the human aspect of the character, depicting a soldier-priest engaged in ritualized removal of magical artifacts. Upon its introduction, the card was received as a reliable, if somewhat slow, utility piece for white-aligned decks that emphasize creature synergy, fitting well into the aggressive, tribal-focused themes promoted in the Commander 2020 releases.
