Where it came from
Devout Chaplain was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the climactic conclusion to the gothic horror-themed Innistrad block, centering on the return of the archangel Avacyn to a plane besieged by eldritch forces. Mechanically, the card was designed to support human-tribal themes, rewarding players for deploying small creatures and utilizing the graveyard, which was a core identity of the white-aligned factions in this setting.
The card was illustrated by Volkan Baga, an artist known for his painterly, classic fantasy style. Baga’s design captures the fanatical fervor of the church on Innistrad, depicting a chaplain amidst the architectural solemnity of the plane's cathedrals. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its utility in limited formats, particularly for its ability to exile artifacts and enchantments, reflecting the set's broader focus on divine retribution against the supernatural threats plaguing the setting.
