Where it came from
Devout Invocation was released in 2013 as part of the Magic 2014 Core Set, a milestone set designed to balance accessibility for newer players with strategic depth for veterans. Mechanically, the card was conceptualized as a high-mana sorcery that rewards players for maintaining a wide board presence, fitting the white color identity of collective strength and divine intervention.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Graciano, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping style to capture the scale of a miraculous gathering. The visual design focuses on the ethereal manifestation of angelic entities, emphasizing the religious and structural themes typical of high-fantasy card sets. It was received by the player base as a situational but powerful finisher in limited play formats.
