Where it came from
Devout Witness was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a theme of political intrigue and commerce on the plane of Mercadia, featuring mechanics centered around discarding cards to fuel various effects, which reflected the set's focus on mercantilism and the cost of power.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his painterly, expressive style. In this piece, Giancola captured a stoic, ecclesiastical figure, aligning with the White mana color identity of the card, which emphasizes order, faith, and the removal of artifacts or enchantments through sacrifice.
