Where it came from
Diabolic Intent was originally released in the 2001 set Planeshift, designed as a powerful black sorcery that requires the sacrifice of a creature to tutor for any card. The version from the Tales of Middle-earth Commander set, released in 2023, reframes this iconic mechanic within the narrative of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, specifically depicting the dark pacts and corrupting influences central to the struggle for power in Middle-earth.
The artwork for this specific printing was created by David Auden Nash. The illustration leans into the grim aesthetic of the set, capturing a moment of sacrifice that mirrors the treacherous nature of the One Ring’s influence. As part of a highly popular collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and the Middle-earth property, this variant was well-received by players for its thematic integration of classic game mechanics with established fantasy lore.
