Where it came from
Diabolic Intent was originally released in the Planeshift expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2001, designed as a powerful black sorcery that allows a player to tutor for any card in their library at the cost of sacrificing a creature. The card reflects the grim, high-stakes nature of Yawgmoth’s influence on the plane of Phyrexia, embodying the theme of trading life or subordinates for absolute strategic advantage.
The version from the 2018 Battlebond set features updated card frames and artwork by artist Daarken, who emphasizes the dark, ritualistic nature of the spell. Battlebond was a set specifically designed for two-headed giant multiplayer formats, and the inclusion of Diabolic Intent served to provide players with a high-utility tool for managing complex board states in cooperative play. It remains a staple in casual and competitive Commander decks alike due to its efficiency.
