Diamond Valley

Diamond Valley was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the very first expansion set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast developed this set to introduce a thematic expansion inspired by Middle Eastern folklore, following the success of the game's initial Alpha and Beta releases. As a rare land card, it reflected the experimental and often high-powered design philosophy of the early nineties, offering a unique utility that allowed players to sacrifice creatures to gain life, fitting the narrative of a mystical location.

The artwork for Diamond Valley was provided by Brian Snõddy, a foundational artist for the early game. His illustration captures a lush, ethereal landscape consistent with the mystical aesthetic requested for the Arabian Nights set. The card is highly regarded by collectors today not only for its distinct mechanical ability, which was rarely replicated in later years, but also for its status as a quintessential piece of Magic history from a limited print run that helped define the secondary market for the trading card game.
