Diaochan, Artful Beauty

Diaochan, Artful Beauty was originally introduced in the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion in 1999, a set designed to introduce Magic: The Gathering to the Asian market by adapting the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The card depicts a legendary figure from Chinese folklore, known as one of the Four Beauties, and was designed to reflect her historical reputation for using her charm to manipulate rival warlords. In the context of gameplay, her ability to destroy creatures mirrors the internal conflicts and betrayals she orchestrated within the narrative.

This specific version, released in 2012 as part of the Commander's Arsenal, features updated artwork by Magali Villeneuve. The Commander's Arsenal was a premium, limited-release box set intended to celebrate the popularity of the Commander format. Villeneuve’s rendition moved away from the more traditional, rigid aesthetic of the 1999 printing, opting for a more ethereal and illustrative style that emphasizes the character's status as a legendary figure. The card was well-received by the player base for its functional reprint utility and its distinct, evocative visual departure from the original.
