Where it came from
Dichotomancy was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique for its 'alternative timeline' premise, featuring color-shifted versions of iconic mechanics and characters that explored how the game's multiverse might have evolved differently. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was intended to challenge player expectations by placing classic effects into new color identities, with Dichotomancy specifically introducing a way to punish players for searching their libraries.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, who was tasked with visualizing a spell that forces a choice or a split reality. Her work depicts a surreal, ethereal figure that aligns with the set's thematic focus on planar instability. Upon release, the card became a notable example of the experimental design philosophy prevalent during the era, garnering interest from players focused on niche strategic effects, though it remains a specialty card rather than a broad competitive staple.
