Provenance

Where it came from

Dimir Machinations was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural entry in the Ravnica block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the philosophy of House Dimir, one of the ten guilds on the plane of Ravnica, which operates as a secret society of spies, information brokers, and assassins. Mechanically, the card serves as a utility tool, allowing players to manipulate their deck, search for specific cards, or disrupt an opponent's strategy, perfectly capturing the guild's focus on clandestine control.

The artwork was commissioned from Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and dark fantasy style. Staples leaned into the Dimir aesthetic of shadows and concealed intentions, depicting a cloaked figure orchestrating schemes from within the gloom of the cityscape. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various constructed formats, particularly within decks centered on combo manipulation and resource denial, earning a reputation among players for its versatility and flavor consistency.
