What it does

This creature has banding as long as you control a Plains. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

"It's amazing how scared a city kid can get at a dog. Now, of course, I'd cross Terisiare alone, and keep no watch if I had a pack of greys hanging on my flanks as I went."— Oddveig Ulfsson, caravan scout

Provenance

Where it came from

Dire Wolves was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of arctic survival and ancient fauna, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of earlier expansions. The card serves as a thematic piece within the game's mechanics, representing the harsh, cold environment of the Dominaria setting during its glacial period.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the early contributors to the game's distinct aesthetic. Maddocks’ work often emphasized a visceral, organic feel, and his depiction of the wolves focused on the rugged, predatory nature of the creature to fit the set's survivalist theme. Upon release, the card was received as a straightforward creature card, typical of the era's design philosophy where mechanics were often kept simple to emphasize flavor and environmental storytelling.
