Where it came from
The Dirge Bat was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a promo card, this specific iteration was distributed through various organized play channels and promotional kits intended to support the set's release. Ikoria focused heavily on the mechanics of mutation and monster themes, drawing inspiration from kaiju cinema and high-fantasy creature design.
The artwork for this card was created by Svetlin Velinov, a prolific illustrator for Wizards of the Coast. Velinov’s design for the Dirge Bat emphasizes the grotesque and predatory nature of the Ikoria setting, utilizing dark, moody lighting to highlight the creature's bat-like physiology. The card was well-received by players for its efficient keyword abilities, particularly its utility in the Limited format, where its ability to remove threats while establishing a board presence proved highly effective.
