Disciple of the Vault

Disciple of the Vault was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, a set centered on a metallic, artifact-dominated world. Designed as a common, its low casting cost and ability to drain life whenever an artifact is put into a graveyard from the battlefield made it a cornerstone of artifact-heavy strategies in the Standard format of the time, often appearing alongside cards like Arcbound Ravager.

The card was illustrated by Matt Thompson, whose aesthetic contribution helped define the biomechanical, scavenged look of the Mirrodin plane. The artwork depicts a hunched, unsettling figure amidst a graveyard of mechanical parts, visually reinforcing the card's function as a recurring threat that punishes opponents for the destruction of artifacts.
