Where it came from
Disciples of Gix was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which revisited the foundational conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. The card depicts the fanatical followers of the overarching antagonist, the Phyrexians, serving the dark god Gix during the brutal war for dominance over the plane of Dominaria.
The card was illustrated by David Gaillet, who leaned into the dark, industrial, and biomechanical aesthetic central to the Phyrexians. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a functional piece of flavor and mechanical support for black-aligned decks, praised by players for how its art and rules text successfully conveyed the encroaching corruption of Gix's influence on the war's timeline.
