Where it came from
Discontinuity was released as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured as a promotional card. As a blue sorcery that allows a player to immediately end their turn, the card was designed to capture the flavor of time manipulation and disruption, a staple mechanic within the game's color pie. Its design reflects the strategic complexity often sought after by control-oriented players, offering a high-impact effect that can negate an opponent's entire turn at the cost of one's own resources.
The card's art, illustrated by Titus Lunter, emphasizes the ethereal and chaotic nature of time magic, utilizing a palette and style consistent with the visual identity of the Core Set 2021 collection. The promo variant with collector number 48s served as a specialized release for the set, aimed at collectors and competitive players looking for distinct versions of core utility spells. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile tool for both Standard and Commander formats, praised for its unique ability to reset game states.
