Where it came from
Discontinuity was released as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featuring as a promotional card. The card serves as a blue sorcery that allows players to effectively end their turn, a powerful mechanical effect often referred to as a 'time walk' variant. It emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with high-impact, rule-bending spells intended to provide tactical depth to control archetypes in competitive play.
The artwork for this specific promotional variant was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who is known for his ethereal and light-focused aesthetic. Voss intended to capture the sensation of a temporal fracture, utilizing swirling blues and distorted architectural elements to convey the abrupt halting of the game state. Upon its release, the card was received with interest by the community for its unique utility and the striking visual departure from traditional card frames, marking it as a sought-after piece for players who prioritize both mechanical efficiency and aesthetic flair.
