Provenance

Where it came from

The Discordant Spirit was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set in the Mirage block, it introduced the concept of modular mechanics and deeper environmental storytelling, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of earlier sets toward a more distinct, exotic aesthetic inspired by African and tropical themes. The card was designed to highlight the red color identity's penchant for chaotic, high-risk gameplay.

The evocative illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists involved in the game’s inception. Maddocks utilized his signature surreal and slightly grotesque style to bring the ephemeral nature of the spirit to life. While the card is often cited for its challenging mechanical utility, it remains a notable example of the darker, more atmospheric visual direction that defined the artistic evolution of the game during the mid-nineties.
