Where it came from
Disemvowel was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card within an 'Un-set,' it was designed by Wizards of the Coast to lean into the game's silver-bordered tradition of humor and metagame manipulation, allowing players to utilize linguistic constraints as a game mechanic. The card's ability requires players to remove vowels from the names of cards they name, reflecting the set's focus on absurdist, interactive gameplay rather than formal tournament viability.
The art for the card was illustrated by Wisnutrahardjo, whose work helped define the whimsical, science-fiction carnival aesthetic of the Unfinity set. The design was received by the Magic community as a creative example of 'Un-set' card design that pushes the boundaries of standard rules, appealing specifically to collectors of novelty cards and those who enjoy casual, unconventional formats like Commander.
