Where it came from
Dismal Backwater was originally introduced in the Fate Reforged expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2015. It belongs to a cycle of common lands known as 'gain lands,' designed to provide mana fixing for Limited formats like Draft and Sealed while offering a modest life-gain benefit to help players stabilize against aggressive strategies. The card features art by the illustrator Eytan Zana, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to capture the stagnant and foreboding essence of a swampy marshland.
The inclusion of Dismal Backwater in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks was a functional decision intended to make the preconstructed products more accessible to new players. By providing reliable dual-color mana sources in these entry-level decks, Wizards of the Coast ensured that beginners could experience a more consistent gameplay flow. The card remains a staple of budget-friendly deck building, valued for its utility in multi-colored Commander strategies where efficient color fixing is essential.
