Dismal Backwater

Dismal Backwater was first introduced as a common land card in the Khans of Tarkir expansion, designed to provide budget-friendly mana fixing for the Blue-Black color combination in limited environments. As part of a cycle of dual lands that enter the battlefield tapped and grant the player one life, it serves as a utility tool for stabilizing health totals while ensuring access to both necessary color sources in the early to mid-game.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Jung Park, who leaned into a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to match the treacherous, swampy terrain of Tarkir's Sultai Brood territories. Upon its inclusion in the Core Set 2021, the card maintained its original design and function, remaining a staple for players navigating casual formats and draft play where slow, reliable land development is prioritized over aggressive, immediate board presence.
