Where it came from
Dissection Tools was released as part of the promotional set for the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Duskmourn: House of Horror. Designed to reflect the set's overarching theme of modern horror tropes and 1980s slasher aesthetics, this artifact card was crafted to mechanically represent the frantic, survivalist nature of the environment. The artwork, consistent with the set's stylized, atmospheric direction, leans into the visceral imagery of surgical instruments repurposed as weapons in a haunted, shifting mansion.
The piece was illustrated by the artist who captured the specific genre-homage tone Wizards of the Coast sought for this horror-focused expansion. As a promotional item, it serves both a functional role in gameplay and a collectible purpose, appealing to players drawn to the set's dark, cinematic visual identity. Its reception has been largely defined by its utility in limited formats and its distinct place within the set's broader exploration of isolation and fear.
