Where it came from
Dive Bomber was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore the concept of the 'morph' mechanic, allowing players to play creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s. The set was conceived as the start of the Onslaught block, intended to revitalize the game's creature-focused gameplay and emphasize tribal synergies within a war-torn setting.
The card's illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, known for his atmospheric and gritty fantasy work. Staples sought to capture the visceral nature of aerial combat within the card's limited frame, depicting a creature mid-dive to emphasize the card's flying ability. Upon release, the card was received as a functional common, serving as a staple utility piece for limited environments, where its ability to interact with artifacts made it a reliable choice for players drafting the set.
