Provenance

Where it came from

Disturbing Plot was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore a world of eternal twilight and folklore-inspired horror, departing from the brighter themes of the previous Lorwyn set. As a common sorcery, the card was intended to provide functional graveyard recursion for black-aligned decks, allowing players to return creature cards to their hand at a relatively low mana cost.

The card features artwork by Larry MacDougall, a long-time contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and often eerie illustrative style. MacDougall sought to capture the unsettling nature of Shadowmoor’s twisted faerie tale aesthetic, depicting a gnarled, shadowy figure amidst a dark, organic environment. The design was received by the player base as a reliable utility card, particularly valued in limited formats for its ability to recover key threats from the graveyard.
