Where it came from
Divergent Equation was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Art Series for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards were specifically produced as collectible, borderless art cards, designed to highlight the intricate illustrations found within the set's themed 'Mystical Archive.' The series was crafted to celebrate the aesthetic identity of the various magical disciplines taught at the fictional Strixhaven University.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Titus Lunter, who captured the fluid, abstract nature of magical mathematics central to the game's lore. Lunter’s design aimed to visualize the chaotic yet structured energy of an equation shifting between realities, utilizing the series' signature wide-format, borderless frame to maximize visual impact. Upon release, the set was well-received by collectors who prioritized the high-quality card stock and the appreciation for the game's expanded artistic visual language.
