Where it came from
Djeru, With Eyes Open was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card depicts a central figure from the Amonkhet storyline, a trial-tested initiate of the god Oketra who experiences a profound psychological transformation after discovering the true, dark nature of his civilization's religious rites. This narrative arc mirrors the overarching shift in the set's tone from the structured trials of the preceding set to the chaotic destruction brought about by the arrival of the dragon Nicol Bolas.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, often emotive character work. Voss designed the piece to convey the character's internal awakening and resolve during a moment of crisis. The artwork was well-received by the player community, particularly for its ability to capture the weight of the character's disillusionment while maintaining the distinct, sun-drenched aesthetic of the Amonkhet plane.
