Provenance

Where it came from

Reason // Believe is a split card released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Hour of Devastation, a conclusion to the Amonkhet block. The card reflects the set's central narrative themes of the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas returning to the plane of Amonkhet to harvest the inhabitants he had groomed for centuries, weaving a story of forced faith and inevitable destruction.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the split-card format to visually represent the dual nature of the mechanic. The design reflects the visual language of the plane, using a sleek, gold-accented aesthetic that distinguishes the 'Reason' side from the more ethereal, divine-focused 'Believe' side. It was received as a versatile, if niche, utility tool within the competitive landscape, praised for its thematic synergy with the set's mechanics.
