Where it came from
Dovin, Hand of Control was released as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2019. This particular version, numbered 229s, is a promotional variant featuring unique alternate art. The set was designed around a climactic narrative event in the game's lore, where numerous planeswalkers converged on the city-plane of Ravnica to battle the elder dragon Nicol Bolas.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, who sought to capture Dovin Baan’s meticulous, calculating nature and his mastery over thopter construction. The design aesthetic reflects the high-stakes, dramatic tone of the War of the Spark storyline. Upon release, this promo variant was well-received by players and collectors alike, noted for its distinct visual departure from the standard set version and its utility in control-focused deck strategies.
