Where it came from
Dovin's Dismissal was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ravnica Allegiance. Within the game's lore, the card depicts a spell cast by Dovin Baan, a Vedalken planeswalker and the appointed Guildpact arbiter of Ravnica. The set focused on the political tension and eventual conflict between the five guilds featured in the expansion, with this card representing the bureaucratic and magical suppression utilized by the Azorius Senate to maintain their version of order.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who provided a visual interpretation of Dovin’s signature style of precise, kinetic magic. Mechanically, the card was designed as a blue-white instant that offers versatility by either bouncing a permanent or preventing damage, reflecting the control-oriented playstyle associated with the Azorius color identity. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility tool for limited environments and a thematic narrative piece capturing the high-stakes political maneuvering of the Ravnica plane.
