Where it came from
Down for Repairs was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card from an 'Un-set,' it was designed to lean into the playful and irreverent side of the game, featuring mechanics that intentionally break standard rules. The card specifically highlights the set's space-circus theme, depicting a robot undergoing maintenance within the bustling, colorful aesthetic that defines the Unfinity collection.
The illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who sought to capture the quirky, retro-futuristic charm consistent with the set's visual identity. By depicting a metallic automaton in a state of disarray, the design serves to emphasize the set's humorous tone while maintaining the high artistic standard expected in contemporary Magic card design. Upon release, it was well-received by players who appreciate the lighthearted, experimental nature of silver-bordered-style cards in a modern frame.
