Provenance

Where it came from

Dragon Blood was originally released in the Chronicles expansion in 1995 and was later reprinted as part of the 2013 Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters set. Designed as an artifact that allows a player to place a +1/+1 counter on a creature for a mana cost, it served as a classic utility piece in early Magic: The Gathering gameplay. Its inclusion in the Heroes vs. Monsters deck was intended to support the deck's thematic focus on beefing up creatures to simulate the power of legendary entities.

The artwork for the Duel Decks version was rendered by Ron Spencer, a prominent illustrator known for his distinct, expressive style that defined much of the game's visual identity during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Spencer's illustration emphasizes the mystical and somewhat visceral nature of the artifact, capturing the item as a glowing, potent vessel. The card has been received by players as a nostalgic, if mechanically modest, artifact that highlights the evolution of the game's creature-strengthening mechanics over the decades.
