Where it came from
The Griffin Guide was released as part of the Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters set in September 2013. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, this set was crafted to highlight the thematic contrast between the archetypal heroes of Theros and the monstrous threats they faced, serving as an early promotional vehicle for the Theros expansion block.
The card features illustration by Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the creature in a style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the period. Within the context of the game's mechanics, the card was intended to provide utility for decks focused on Griffin tribal synergies, and it was received as a functional, if niche, inclusion for casual play formats rather than a staple for competitive tournament environments.
