Dragon Roost was first introduced as a rare enchantment in the Scourge expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2003, serving as a powerful late-game engine for red-aligned decks. Its design reflects the core color philosophy of the plane of Otaria, where dragon-themed mechanics played a significant role in the block's aggressive archetypes. The card allows players to pay mana to generate flying dragon tokens, creating a formidable threat that can overwhelm opponents who lack specific answers for high-cost permanents.

The version from the Tenth Edition core set, released in 2007, features artwork by the illustrator Arnie Swekel. As part of the Tenth Edition's focus on curating iconic cards from the game's past for a broad audience, the card maintained its original functionality. Swekel’s illustration depicts the titular roost with a focus on dramatic scale and fire-breathing aesthetics, capturing the visceral fantasy tone that defined much of the visual identity of the era. The set marked the transition to the modern card frame, giving the card a clean, streamlined presentation.
